It’s official: Facebook and social media are out of control. A quarter of a BILLION Facebook accounts are fake!

Facebook reported its first quarter earnings today. The company brought in just over $8 billion in revenue, a jump of 49 percent since the first quarter of 2016. That gave it a net profit of just over $3 billion, up a whopping 76 percent over the same period last year.

The company now has 1.94 billion monthly active users, up 17 percent from the first quarter of 2016. (Currently, the world population is estimated at 7.5 billion.) It didn’t bother to break out mobile users into a separate category, as it has in the past, a sign that mobile is now the default mode for engaging with Facebook.

87 million of us had our data stolen to help Trump win. Russian disinformation operations generated BILLIONS of shares. On Wednesday CEO Zuckerberg will make history testifying before the US Congress.

The social networking giant quietly admitted one key fact: 10% of users on the platform don’t technically exist.  They’re simply duplicate accounts of real users on Facebook.  Furthermore, 2-3% more are “user-misclassified and undesirable accounts,” up 1% from initial estimates.

207 million are duplicates, while up to 60 million are fake. Fake accounts include profiles that companies had mistakenly created instead of dedicated pages. Other users had also maliciously created accounts on the platform “for spamming and [activities] banned by Facebook.”
