What is thinking?

We are told it’s the ability to process or consider or reason about something. But all we have is the data the information given to us from conventional established sources E = mc2 – which is a complete fiction. Do you really think about it? I don’t think so.

We are also told it’s using thought or rational judgement; intelligence to analyse data and come to a logical and truthful answer. What is truth? It is either a creation of conditional consciousness or something one experiences through one’s unconditional senses. The truth is “I knocked that priceless Ming vase off your shelf and it shattered into a thousand bits.” Is only truthful if you did not invent it in your mind but did it as part of your everyday experience.

If we looked at a homeless man or women sitting on the streets – our opinion is shaped by the media – “he’s just a lazy arse” “Drug addict” “Worthless” and so on. The newspapers and television do not encourage any compassion or empathy. And you have that fear in the back of your mind that you will lose your job your home your wife and kids your car your holidays your private medical insurance ypur network of good and close friends and your life will go down the pain and you too will be subject to the social conditional consciousness of every one else.

There is the every day conditional consciousness where thinking is an habitual response to stimuli and rarely the unconditional conscious effort of thinking with a clear mind. Repetitive learning gives rise to hard-wired behaviours which in the reality outside your head are praised encouraged you are financially rewarded – but inside your head – all these neurons just fire in a repetitive way and do not form new connections easily. “You can not teach an old dog new tricks” comes to mind,

For me – as a teacher – am always focusing on clarity of mind – to see things as they are. And to encourage people to first free their minds which will enable them to think clearly rationally and reliably. Buddhist practice is about Analytical thinking – refers to the ability to separate a whole into its basic parts in order to examine the parts and their relationships. It requires some effort to be consistent. It is to come to understand the nature the real reality of our experiences and this requires soma basic simple steps:

  1. To know your world and understand it:

  • Be teachable: This about having a personality that is open to change and learning new things.

  • Not to memorise: Think about what your being told – not to learn it by rote ie. Brainwashing yourself to repeat verbatim.

  • Concentration: Thinking requires concentration focusing your mind – not day dreaming or wishful thinking – you need to think of yourself being in a hole it’s February/March deep winter and it’s raining and freezing – and you have a bomb to defuse.

  • Investigate: Thinking also requires logical research investigation on your part. You need to find out the factual evidence for yourself. Evidence gathering – and not believing – we often “believe” the reporter on all television networks to be telling us the “truth” and they are “freely” giving their opinion of events – this is completely untrue – they have a cue screens (Cue cards, also known as note cards, are cards with words written on them that help actors and speakers remember what they have to say. They are typically used in television productions where they can be held off-camera and are unseen by the audience) on which they have to read and be convincing – they are acting out a reality for you to believe in. Fact – there are no free thinking Journalists that work for television.

  • Clear-headed: Thinking is a rational logical and passionate process – knowing if you crack the code then there’s a cup of tea/coffee waiting or a pot of gold!.
